A therapeutic practice that involves applying pressure and manipulation techniques to the head, scalp, neck, and sometimes the face. It's profoundly relaxing and offers a unique set of benefits distinct from body massages. Key Areas Addressed: Scalp: The entire surface, working on the galea aponeurotica (the connective tissue layer under the skin) and the muscles attached to it (like the occipitalis and frontalis). Pressure Points: Specific points along the hairline, temples, base of the skull (occipital ridge), and brow. Face & Forehead: Some styles include gentle work on the forehead, jaw (masseter muscle), and sinuses. Core Focus & Primary Goals: Promote Deep Relaxation & Relieve Stress: Targets tension held in the scalp, temples, and jaw. The calming effect on the nervous system is immediate and powerful. Stimulate Circulation: Increases blood flow to the scalp, which is believed to nourish hair follicles. Relieve Headaches & Sinus Pressure: Specific techniques can alleviate tension headaches and ease congestion. Improve Hair & Scalp Health: Loosens dead skin, can help with dandruff, and distributes natural oils. Enhance Mental Clarity: By reducing stress and improving circulation, it can create a feeling of mental "lightness" and alertness. What to Expect During a Session: Setting: Can be done seated in a chair (like Indian Head Massage) or lying down on a massage table. You remain fully clothed for seated versions. Techniques Used: Effleurage: Light, gliding strokes over the scalp and neck. Petrissage: Kneading and lifting of the scalp tissue. Friction: Small, deep circular movements with the fingertips to work on specific points. Tapotement: Light, brisk tapping or hacking with the sides of the hands (common in Indian Head Massage). Hair Pulling: Gentle, rhythmic pulling of the hair to stimulate the roots (in some traditions). Pressure Point Hold: Steady, firm pressure on points like the temples or base of the skull.
